Viserys' younger brother Daemon is the presumed heir to the throne at the start of the series, though his hostile personality and antics leave him with very few allies at court. He's also a talented warrior and dragonrider, who thinks he'd be a better ruler than his brother. In 2018, Sonoya Mizuno starred in a variety of projects that introduced her to a wider audience that may not have been aware of her before. "We felt like we were making something rare and special," she told The Cut of her experience filming the hit movie.
Velaryon Family
The conflict of Alicent and Aegon going against Rhaenyra for the Iron Throne will continue to be central to House of the Dragon in Season 2 as the Dance of the Dragon and a civil war gets underway. In a misunderstanding of Viserys' dying words, which were the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy, Alicent came to believe he was naming their son Aegon as his heir in place of Rhaenyra, spurring her endeavor to crown him king. After House of the Dragon's mid-way time jump, Olivia Cooke took over from Emily Carey as the older Alicent Hightower, now queen of Westeros through her marriage to King Viserys Targaryen. The couple had three children, Aegon, Aemond, and Helaena, but none were named heir to the Iron Throne, with Rhaenyra holding that honor. Although initially Alicent wasn't bothered by this, she became convinced Rhaenyra was plotting against her family, and, as such, conspired to have Aegon named as heir. With a civil war with the rule of Westeros now underway, Smith's Daemon will continue to be a key player in Season 2 as a major participant in the conflict.

Plotting family members hungry for power are a mainstay of Westeros and everywhere in Game of Thrones, and Otto ranks somewhere in the middle of them. He’s certainly no Tywin Lannister or Olenna Tyrell, but he’s better fit to help maneuver his daughter Alicent and her son Aegon toward the Iron Throne than most. Like many of Westeros’ best schemers, Otto also served as Hand of the King during the rule of Viserys. Though he is the brother of King Viserys, Daemon resents the throne because Viserys refused to allow him to gift a dragon egg to his lover, Mysaria. Daemon is one of the greatest warriors in Westeros at this time and rides the dragon Caraxes.
Jacaerys Velaryon
Daughter of the Hand, Alicent Hightower is played by Emily Carey in her youth and by Olivia Cooke as an adult. Because of her father’s position, Alicent was raised in the Red Keep and grew up as a friend to Princess Rhaenyra. House of the Dragon isn’t the first time that Emily Carey has played the younger version of a strong and powerful woman. She also appears as the 12 year-old version of Diana in 2017’s Wonder Woman and as the 14 year-old version of Lara Croft in the 2018 Tomb Raider film adaptation. Olivia Cooke has had many roles in horror and drama films and TV series including Bates Motel, Ouija, Thoroughbreds, Sound of Metal, and Ready Player One. The first born child of King Viserys, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen has been selected as his heir despite the Targaryen’s history of patriarchal lineage.
House of the Dragon: Season 1/Cast

Considine may be most recognizable to viewers from his collaborations with Edgar Wright. He played DS Andy Wainwright in "Hot Fuzz," and followed it up with a role as Steven Prince in "The World's End." The British filmmaker told That Shelf that he considers the actor part of his filmmaking family. So, when he started writing "The World's End," he kept him in mind. "With Paddy, who was really funny in 'Hot Fuzz,' I just [thought], 'Man, I loved working with Paddy. Let's write another role for Paddy,'" he recalled. "You just don't know what you're gonna get with these characters," she said. "... Such is the human condition. You can do some horrendous things, but then you can also do some wonderful things as well. It's very complex."
Phoebe Campbell as Rhaena Targaryen
He serves as Hand for a century, until he runs afoul of the rumors regarding his son Harwin and Princess Rhaenyra. After the 10-year time jump, Laena is married to Daemon and mother to two twin girls, Baela and Rhaena. She's also a fierce dragonrider and is bonded to the oldest and largest dragon in Westeros, Vhagar. When we meet her in episode 6, she's expecting her third child and wants to return to her ancestral home Driftmark, and most of all she wants to live and die as a dragonrider. House of the Dragon is Foueillis-Mose's first-ever screen role, and not much is known about the child actress.
House Targaryen
The pattern continues in "House of the Dragon," where Carey stars as a younger Alicent Hightower, whose older depiction is played by Olivia Cooke. When her casting was announced, Carey hopped on Instagram Live (via Daily Mail) to gush about how excited she was. That's a good thing considering he's continuing his fantasy reign with "House of the Dragon." In it, the actor plays Ser Harrold Westerling, a member of the King's Guard. "So excited to be part of this show and to share it with everyone very soon," McTavish tweeted alongside one of the show's first-look posters. "Well, if you are part of it I'll sure as hell watch it," an excited fan wrote back. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she described her "House of the Dragon" character as a bold politician.
Viserys is an ailing king whose nearly 30 years of rule end in complete disaster thanks to his controversial choice of successor. King Viserys' cousin Rhaenys is a Targaryen princess and dragonrider, who married Lord Corlys and has two children with him, Laena and Laenor. She was a contender for the crown following King Jaehaerys' death, and had a stronger claim than Viserys, but since she was a woman she was passed over. She's now known as "the Queen Who Never Was," though her son Laenor can be a serious contender for the throne following Viserys' death.
Carey is best known for her roles as Grace Beauchamp in Casualty and in the BBC/Netflix series Get Even. The following main cast members are confirmed for House of the Dragon season 2. Father of Ser Harwin and Larys, Lord Lyonel Strong serves on the King’s court as the Master of Laws. Lord Lyonel is played by Gavin Spokes who has appeared in the TV series The Ipcress File and the Peacock original Hitmen. Despite coming to Westeros with nothing, Mysaria has risen in status to become Prince Daemon’s most trusted ally. Fans of Alex Garland’s work may recognize actress Sonoya Mizuno from her roles in his projects Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Devs.

Millie Alcock and the rest of the first-generation Targaryens and Hightowers will, as far as HBO has indicated, not be returning this season in flashbacks. That doesn’t mean that we won’t see them again someday, but at least Paddy Considine does not have to jeopardize his own health for another stunning performance that the awards circuit decides to ignore. House of The Dragon is set in Westeros, the same fictional world as Game of Thrones, and it takes place about 300 years before the events of that show. The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which tells the history of the Targaryen dynasty. Fabien Frankel stars in "House of the Dragon" as Ser Criston Cole, a character Inverse described as being at the very core of the story.
He previously appeared in the BBC series Sherlock, HBO's Chernobyl, PBS's Sandition, and the BBC's Doctor Who. See the full list of House of the Dragon cast and characters here. Season 2 has yet to set an official release date but has been filming in the UK for several weeks now and is expected to wrap production between September and October 2023.
As an adult, Baela is betrothed to her step-brother Prince Jacaerys Velaryon. The second son of King Viserys I Targaryen and Queen Alicent Hightower. Aemond longs for a dragon of his own and is obsessed with obtaining one, eventually gaining the large dragon Vhagar but loses an eye in a clash with Prince Lucerys Velaryon.
Cooke's breakthrough performance came in Psycho prequel Bates Motel, where she played a childhood friend of the troubled Norman Bates. She later bagged film roles in horror films The Quiet Ones, Ouija and The Limehouse Golem, as well as Steven Spielberg blockbuster Ready Player One and Riz Ahmed's awards contender The Sound of Metal. She currently plays Sid Baker on Apple TV+ spy thriller Slow Horses.
