Use your preferred checks out as screen pieces for shelving that looks easily put together. Displaying collectibles over shelves in a glazed cabinet is a lovely way to keep them contained and protected, plus saves on the dusting! Painting the back of a cabinet i a vibrant brilliant way to set off a collection, especially when the pieces a light and have sculptural shapes. Design DIYer Kate Voegele took them in her own direction by building a shelf to unite two Billy bookcase units.
Add a Shelf Rail
With free shape, you do not need to put the books combined with other vases or Pict arts. It is light means that you do not have put in many objects inside, and it arcs a brilliant performance inside. With the asymmetric design, you do not have to organize the shelf with a rigid treatment. All you have to do is make them appropriate for some books with varied sizes. Absolutely nothing adds a little life to a room like a bit of flora. Simply a couple of plants can get up an entire space, including texture to your shelves and a pop of color to your room.
Create a Bookshelf
Hanging shelves are suspended from a wall, ceiling, or the underside of a cabinet. The style would be ideal for a craft room and if you had a lot of small items. More than anything, DIY custom shelving are great ways to store things in your home or office.
Hang a Ladder
Floating brackets are used to give shelves a floating look but they’re completely invisible. Let’s finish the list with something festive and Christmas-related. We’re talking about a shelving unit made of a repurposed sled. You can find more details on the project and the steps you need to take if you want to create other easy-to-follow crafts at funkyjunkyinteriors. Another example where the brackets suit the shelves in a great way is offered on craftsmandrive. The shelves featured here have an overall simple and versatile design although the brackets tend to give them a rustic feel.
Ideal to add color and personality, whether you're #shelfie(ing) or not, these looks don't all need brackets (or a drill for that matter) so are easy and inexpensive to recreate at home. Shelving ideas are not merely about storage; they are a canvas for expressing your unique style and personality. From minimalist floating shelves that create an illusion of space to ornate vintage bookshelves that add a touch of nostalgia, there’s something for everyone. Bookshelf decor ideas shouldn’t be limited to your living room.
Book Display Corner Shelf
The interior was painted a nice shade of turquoise while the rest of the wood kept its natural color. These honeycomb shelves look really chic and they’re not that difficult to make either. The challenge is cutting the pieces of wood at just the right angle.
Mid-Century Shelving
If you have a tray, now would be the time to add that too,' says Samantha Wilson. 'If you are short on space and your shelves are already crammed full, try adding artwork that can hang in front of the books, treating the bookshelves as wallpaper,' says Simon Temprell. When selecting objects to decorate your shelves with, choose an array of sizes and heights as this will ensure your display flows say the experts. When you have more than enough cabinets but are lacking in counters, consider making room for floating shelves above them. There you can put your go-to cookbooks, seasoning, and oils, keeping them easily accessible and at arm's length while maintaining a clear food prep area.

There are different designs, and some are bigger than others, though. Short shelves are perfect if you need to store a few books or vinyl but need nothing fancy or too big to do it. Think of it as a miniature bookcase that’s as wide but not as long. It’s far from a stylish choice, though – but perfect for certain occasions. A suspended shelf looks great but is a little bit tricky to set up.
Stack the two halves one on top of the other and this will be your shelving unit. You can find a bunch of great tutorials and designs on the internet, the example offered on hildablue being one of them. For this project you’ll need a wooden shelf, some paint (optional), mason jars and screws. A similar design, this time for the office, is offered on scandifoodie.
You can also blend heights and textures to keep things visually interesting. If there's one thing the interior designers agree that shelves can't be without its books. 'Books are another element to always include in your shelving too, afterall, books make a house a home,' says Emma Deterding. 'The different colors, textures and prints on the covers will also add eye catching detail - just be sure to group them by colour to create an easy-on-the-eye rainbow effect. Perfect for bringing height and structure to your display, they 'can be arranged traditionally or positioned in small stacks with space for an ornament to sit on top,' he adds.
Having your office at home—and especially in your bedroom—can be a recipe for never-ending work headaches. But this airy shelving system, fitted with clean and cohesive white boxes for filing, is nothing but serene. It seems easy to say organized and focused with a setup like this. For plant ideas, try a pothos (which does well in low-light) or a philodendron (which thrives in medium light with weekly waterings). This gorgeous kitchen extension was designed by George & James Architects . A great starting point may, actually, be just to put all your belongings on your shelves, randomly, to see how they fall.
They don’t need to have the same dimensions or shape as long as you can combine them like pieces of a puzzle and obtain a good-looking composition at the end. Develop a color story with your books to enhance your room’s color combination. Or go minimal and present two or three of your preferred covers as an art setup. If you prefer to do any of your reading offline, you know how quickly books and magazines stack up.
To start, choose a color palette that works for the surrounding space. Of course, depending on the room, you can also set a style or a specific theme. Style your shelves with items that you want to remain visible and accessible, or simply enjoy looking at as you go about your daily life.
The benefit of opting for a shelving unit is that you can move it around to different places depending on where it is needed. Simple gold shelves flank either side of the sofa in this relaxing living room. If you prefer a more airy look, abstain from filling your shelves to the tippity top and leave a little breathing room. If you have a collection of items just begging to be admired, why not display them on your build ins? Here, vases and vessels of all kinds are the star of the show. Every living room needs comfortable seating and an inviting atmosphere.
Install cabinets below your faux built-in shelves for extra storage that helps sell the final look. So if you’re looking for storage ideas, bathroom shelves are probably the best place to start. We’ll delve into the art of blending form and function seamlessly, turning mundane storage into stunning focal points. Regulations in the 1970s and 1980s limited asbestos use in new products. Asbestos materials in the home can pose a danger to residents. Over time, asbestos-containing products can become worn or damaged. Disturbing these materials can cause microscopic asbestos fibers to become airborne.

So get checked by your doctor so they can find out what's going on with you. For this reason, the U.S. government has banned all new uses of asbestos. But certain uses that were developed before 1989 are still legal. Depending on how many samples you want to be checked, the inspection and test can cost between $100 and $750.
Tips for a Safe Asbestos Removal Process
Reviewers I found who were happy with this testing kit said that it was simple to use and reasonably priced without hidden fees. Unhappy customers said that the company’s website was difficult to navigate and that the kit sometimes delivered inaccurate results. To help you select the right kit, I tracked down and evaluated the best asbestos test kits on the market today. Below, you’ll find my top recommendations, answers to frequently asked questions about testing for asbestos, and resources that can help you safely clean up asbestos from your property. On Sept. 11, 2001, when the World Trade Center was destroyed, hundreds of tons of asbestos got into the air. Rescue workers, nearby residents, and those who helped with cleanup efforts may have inhaled it.

For slightly damaged asbestos-containing material, sometimes the best way to deal with it is to limit access to the area and not to touch or disturb it. A trained and accredited asbestos professional should take samples for analysis, since a professional knows what to look for, and because there may be an increased health risk if fibers are released. In fact, if done incorrectly, sampling can be more hazardous than leaving the material alone. We now know that prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to lung disease. When disturbed, tiny abrasive asbestos fibers are easily inhaled, which damages lung tissue and can cause cancer. In homes built prior to 1975, asbestos is most commonly found as thermal insulation on basement boilers and pipes.
Guide to Asbestos in the Home
It’s a curly white material that offers superior heat resistance, fireproofing, and flexibility, which made it incredibly popular for use in products ranging from asphalt, to plastics, to clothing. Search for “asbestos inspection” online to find a licensed expert in your area. The U.S. Department of Commerce offers a list of accredited asbestos laboratories online. It’s extremely difficult to identify asbestos just by looking at it, so you need to send samples to a lab for testing.

Covering (enclosure) involves placing something over or around the material that contains asbestos to prevent release of fibers. Exposed insulated piping may be covered with a protective wrap or jacket. For further help in dealing with asbestos problems in the home, contact your state’s environmental affairs agency. If handled properly, asbestos can be prevented from ever causing a problem in your home.
How can workers protect themselves from asbestos exposure?
Asbestos fibers can also be detected in urine, mucus, and feces, but these tests are not reliable for determining how much asbestos may be in an individual’s lungs (2). The EPA’s National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) help protect air quality and reduce health risks presented by various contaminants, such as asbestos. These regulations create safety standards for many home projects, including renovations. NESHAP also covers asbestos waste transportation and disposal. In general, asbestos materials are considered relatively safe when they are in good condition and there are no signs of damage. If the material is damaged or worn, a professional may suggest removing or encapsulating the product.

Even if the material is in good condition, the best option is to leave it alone. Some firms offer combinations of testing, assessment, and correction. A professional hired to assess the need for corrective action should not be connected with an asbestos-correction firm. It is better to use two different firms so there is no conflict of interest.
Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) visited Eye Track Limited’s site in Stretford, Manchester, and found an uncontrolled spread of asbestos containing materials around the premises. A company and its director have been sentenced after workers were exposed to asbestos and its potential harmful effects. After a doctor suspects an asbestos-related health condition, he or she can use a number of tools to help make the actual diagnosis. Some of these tools are physical examination, chest x-ray and pulmonary function tests. Your doctor may also refer you to a specialist who treats diseases caused by asbestos.
If you notice an error or have comments or questions on our content please contact us. In the US, asbestos was mined in several states, including California, Vermont, and Montana. Libby, Montana, was also home to one of the world’s largest and deadliest asbestos mines before it closed in 1990. Whether you live in a house in Venice, FL, or an apartment in Duluth, MN, read on to learn everything you need to know about asbestos in your home. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
A lung biopsy, which detects microscopic asbestos fibers in pieces of lung tissue removed by surgery, is the most reliable test to confirm exposure to asbestos (2). A bronchoscopy is a less invasive test than a biopsy and detects asbestos fibers in material that is rinsed out of the lungs (2). It is important to note that these procedures cannot determine how much asbestos an individual may have been exposed to or whether disease will develop.
For example, spare vinyl floor tiles may have a stamp on the box or the back of the tiles stating they contain asbestos. These products came in a variety of shapes and sizes, and not all were made with asbestos. A date included on the packaging may also indicate that they were manufactured during the height of asbestos use (1930s – 1970s). The cost of asbestos testing varies depending on the number of samples tested and the methods used.
People with occupational asbestos-related diseases also may qualify for financial help, including medical payments, under state workers’ compensation laws. Because eligibility requirements vary from state to state, workers employed by private companies or by state and local government agencies should contact their state workers’ compensation board. Contact information for state workers’ compensation officials may be found at the U.S. A thorough physical examination, including a chest x-ray and lung function tests, may be recommended.
This program provides workers’ compensation benefits to Federal (civilian) employees for employment-related injuries and diseases. Benefits include wage replacement, payment for medical care, and, where necessary, medical and vocational rehabilitation assistance in returning to work. Benefits may also be provided to dependents if the injury or disease causes the employee’s death. Asbestos has been classified as a known human carcinogen (a substance that causes cancer) by the U.S.
US consumption of asbestos peaked in 1973 and the first bans began shortly after. While the dates listed for phased out asbestos-containing materials may be used as a guide, it should not be assumed that asbestos will be absent after those dates. Certain materials such as joint compound, vinyl floor tiles, and mastics have a long shelf-life and may have been stored away and used after the materials were phased out. However, for your safety and to ensure accurate test results, I recommend choosing a test kit from a trusted manufacturer that uses a testing lab to verify the results.
Additionally, always use caution when drilling, sanding, sawing, or renovating any area of your home. All types of asbestos can cause mesothelioma and are incredibly harmful. Houses built before the mid-1980s are the most likely to have asbestos, and homes built from the mid-1980s until the early 1990s have a smaller but still possible chance.
Group participation is mandatory to complete requirement 7, but all of the other nonproject requirements also work well in collaboration. Note, though, that each Scout must deliver his own game prototype to complete the project. This ensures that every Scout has the chance to develop and use the critical thinking skills that are part of testing and design iteration. If they want to collaborate on their projects after completing the requirements for the badge they are encouraged to do so, but that is beyond the scope of this badge.

Game Design Merit Badge – Games have been a part of human culture for thousands of years. From ancient board games to modern video games, they’ve been loved by people from all walks of life. The answer is game designers, and their work is much more than just fun and games—it’s an art and a science. Before a Scout begins the prototyping phase, he must have counselor approval for his design concept. The counselor must make sure that he has put enough effort into the concept phase to have a good foundation for the prototype phase. Watch out for overly ambitious projects that could lead to unnecessary frustration.

See the resources section at the end of (the) pamphlet. This could be a board, cards, or even a simple digital version. Games motivate both young and old to find creative solutions, practice new skills, and keep their brains active. Scouts who work on the Game Design merit badge will likely look at the games they play differently and with a new level of appreciation.
Game Design Merit Badge Requirements
Play the game with other people according to your designed player format. If the rules are confusing or if there’s a way to cheat the game, fix it. Make at least one change to the game rules or goals, then play again.
Then, jot down the rules so everyone knows how to play, and list out the resources, like cards, tokens, or points. Maybe your game is a card game for two players where the goal is to collect certain combinations of cards, all set in a fantasy world with wizards and dragons. Either of these options will give you real-world insights into the game development process and can guide you on what skills and knowledge you’ll need to enter this exciting field. Another choice is to meet someone who teaches game development.
They are engineers, piecing together the rules and systems that make the game tick. They are scientists, testing and tweaking to make sure the game is fun. They are dreamers, coming up with new and amazing experiences. And they are also teachers, helping players understand the rules.

The Scouts BSA Merit Badge program gives Scouts the opportunity to explore and learn. Over 135 badges are available to earn, ranging from American Business to Woodworking. Complete details and worksheets for this merit badge are available here.
It is important to understand that the Scout is making a prototype. Scouts will learn about elements of gameplay, game analysis, thematic elements and intellectual property. The badge focuses on the concepts behind game design, not just video games.
In his notebook, the Scout must demonstrate an initial concept, multiple design iterations based on initial testing, and feedback from blind testing. Once his concept is approved, the Scout can begin to build a prototype of his game. Testing of a Scout's game can be done at Scouting functions such as camp outings.
Chartered on October 1st, 1920, Troop 8 has helped over 125 young adults achieve the highest rank in scouting, the Eagle. Countless young people have learned about camping, citizenship, hobbies, and the values that form the foundation for being leaders in their school, church, community and chosen vocation. Yes, working in a team is encouraged, but make sure each Scout contributes to the game’s design and development, and fulfills all the individual requirements.
The Game Design merit badge gives Scouts the opportunity to design and prototype a game. The game can be electronic, athletic, tabletop, or a pen and paper game. Discuss with your counselor five of the following 17 game design terms.
It was interesting to see how each game is different but they all have things that make them fun. Parents are required to check-in scouts and attend a short opening orientation. Discuss the key skills they emphasize to their students and why those skills are essential for making games. What I love most about my game is how engaged everyone was during their turn.
Designing your very own game is an exciting journey that lets you be the boss of how everything works. First, you’ll need to figure out the basics like what kind of game it is, who’s playing, what they’re trying to achieve, and what the game feels like. Many parent volunteers serve our Troop as Merit Badge Counselors (MBC).

So, a game is usually made up of who can play, what they’re trying to do, the rules they have to follow, the things they can use, and sometimes a story or setting to make it more fun. Before proceeding to create a prototype, make sure to get your merit badge counselor’s approval for your game concept. Next, think about why someone would want to play your game.
Then, arrange to meet a person who works in the game development industry. It could be a game designer, programmer, artist, or someone in marketing. Remember, the aim is to create a game that people enjoy and understand easily. Keep track of all your steps and thoughts in your game design notebook. Testing and refining your game design is like making a tasty dish; you’ve got to taste it and tweak the recipe until it’s just right. After you’ve cooked up your initial game idea into a working prototype, it’s time to see if it’s actually fun to play.
And since the diseases it causes take years to show up, you might prolong exposure without being aware. Asbestos cement sheets were also sometimes used for interior walls. On the outside of older homes, these sheets were used for roofing and siding. Over time, these materials can start wearing out, exposing residents to asbestos. Homes built before the 1980s may have wallboards and textures that contain asbestos.

However, seeing fibers protruding from a product does not mean it contains asbestos. Brent should have known that many older plumbing systems are wrapped in asbestos insulation. The insulation may have already posed an exposure risk before he started the project, but cutting the damaged material released even more fibers into the air. Brent should have hired an asbestos professional to seal the asbestos insulation. The federal government has training courses for asbestos professionals around the country.

But it's still used in items like vinyl floor tiles, cement pipes, clothes, and brake pads. The EPA has banned it in paper, flooring felt, fake fireplace embers, and other products. It can cause cough, shortness of breath, and even permanent lung damage. Symptoms might also include chest pain, and fingernails and toenails that look oddly wide or round. Like mesothelioma, it doesn't usually occur until years after a person has breathed in asbestos fibers on a regular basis.

Wallboards go by many different names, like drywall, gypsum board or sheetrock. During the manufacturing process, asbestos was mixed with other materials and sandwiched between two sheets of paper. Asbestos in walls can be disturbed when drilling through them or if the outer paper is damaged. Asbestos testing is the only way to definitively know if asbestos is present. Hiring an asbestos abatement professional is the safest way to test for asbestos. Anyone who owns or plans to buy a house built before the 1980s may want to have a home asbestos test performed, especially if they plan to remodel.
The Mesothelioma Center at Asbestos.com has provided patients and their loved ones the most updated and reliable information on mesothelioma and asbestos exposure since 2006. During this one-hour event, ODPHP will present on three Healthy People 2030 featured objectives related to indoor and outdoor air quality and health. If you’ve found asbestos in your home and want to remove it, the UK Health Security Agency does not recommend the DIY removal of asbestos without advice. It says if you find any asbestos which requires removal, you should contact your local council for more information about asbestos and its disposal. An asbestos survey on a 2-3 bedroom house typically costs around £250. But the cost of an asbestos survey will vary depending on factors like the size of the property and when it was built.

If you know for certain that you were exposed to asbestos, it is a good idea to seek annual screenings from a qualified lung specialist such as an occupational pulmonologist. If you are concerned that you were exposed to asbestos, start by talking to your primary care physician. There is no test to determine if you’ve been exposed to asbestos, but there are tests to detect asbestos-related diseases. After years of exposure to those fibers, people may develop a cancer known as mesothelioma, which forms tumors on the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. Their combined expertise means we help any mesothelioma patient or loved one through every step of their cancer journey.
By 1980, asbestos was eliminated from most housing materials, and today it is classified as a carcinogen. Another EPA resource that may be of interest is the brochure titled Current Best Practices for Preventing Asbestos Exposure Among Brake and Clutch Repair Workers. Released in April 2007, this brochure includes work practices for both automotive professionals and home mechanics that may be used to avoid asbestos exposure.
Types of Asbestos Samples
An asbestos building inspector will take small samples from your home and test them in a lab. Everyone is exposed to asbestos at some time during their life. Low levels of asbestos are present in the air, water, and soil.
How Can I Identify Materials That Contain Asbestos?
Anyone who believes they have been exposed to asbestos while working on a project at home should consult their doctor. A doctor can help monitor for signs and symptoms of mesothelioma or other asbestos-related diseases. The number of samples needed, type of testing completed on the samples and part of the country can all impact cost. According to data from Essel Environment, the national average for basic asbestos testing is $600. Taking steps to avoid asbestos exposure, at home or on a jobsite, can help lower the risk of asbestos-related diseases. However, if you collect samples, you can create exposure risks.
Asbestos-containing materials that aren’t damaged or disturbed are not likely to pose a health risk. Usually the best thing is to leave asbestos-containing material alone if it is in good condition. However, the average price of asbestos removal is around £150 per m2, according to Checkatrade.
Some other areas to investigate for asbestos include floor tiles, popcorn ceilings, ceiling tiles, sheet vinyl flooring, wall panels, roofing tiles, and pipe cement. Some asbestos testing kit manufacturers include a pair of latex gloves, which is the bare minimum when it comes to providing personal protective equipment (PPE) for the user. Though you can acquire PPE separately from the test kit, it’s convenient to find a kit with goggles, gloves, a respirator or filtered mask, and coveralls, depending on the severity of your situation. This type led to many cases of cancer and diseases related to asbestos, and it's not mined anymore. It used to be used in products like paint, sealants, insulation, roofing, and plumbing materials.
Other symptoms include pain around the rib cage, problems breathing, a cough, pain or lumps in the belly, fatigue, and constipation. It’s certainly important to make sure your home is free of potential hazards, and asbestos is a major one for homes built within a particular time frame. If you think you might have asbestos in your home, it’s critical that you call a professional.
Smokers who are also exposed to asbestos have a risk of developing lung cancer that is greater than the individual risks from asbestos and smoking added together (3, 6). There is evidence that quitting smoking will reduce the risk of lung cancer among asbestos-exposed workers (4). Smoking combined with asbestos exposure does not appear to increase the risk of mesothelioma (10). However, people who were exposed to asbestos on the job at any time during their life or who suspect they may have been exposed should not smoke. If it is left alone — and not released into the air — asbestos-containing materials will not likely pose any health risks.
Removal is complex and must be done only by a trained and accredited asbestos professional. Improper removal may actually increase your and your family’s exposure to asbestos fibers. The risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma increases with the number of fibers inhaled.

The Rice family decided to move to the Ansonia Hotel in 1907 and sold it to the tobacconist Solomon Schinasi, whose family modified the house in 1908, 1912, and 1927. The Schinasi family lived there until around 1945, after which the Heckscher Foundation for Children leased it. The yeshiva attempted to sell and demolish the mansion in the late 1970s, prompting a heated dispute with local preservationists. The house was taken over in 1988 by another Jewish day school, Yeshiva Ketana, which restored the house in the 1990s.

The cabins, ranging from the luxurious Haven suites to the cozy inside cabins, cater to every traveler’s preference. Dating to 2001, Norwegian Sun is one of Norwegian's oldest and smallest vessels, and it lacks many of the family-focused onboard attractions that are typical for the line's newer and bigger vessels. You won't find big waterparks, go-kart racing tracks or laser tag zones on this ship.

While all NCL ships offer a luxury experience, the cost can vary based on the ship’s age, itinerary, and cabin type. We rank the best Norwegian Cruise Line ships, taking into account what each of these vessels offer. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sea traveler, this post will help you find the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for your vacation. At 78,309 tons, Norwegian Sun is less than half the size of the biggest Norwegian ships, and it holds just 1,878 passengers at double occupancy. (Compare that to more than 4,000 for Norwegian's biggest vessels.) Expect a far more intimate experience than what you'll find on most of the ships mentioned above. The cabins measure just 100 square feet but are superbly designed to maximize storage space.
Norwegian Sun: Best for retirees
Certain Norwegian ships are best for budget travelers, while others are best for luxury travelers. The ships are slightly smaller and feel a lot less crowded, which really helps to accentuate the modern and minimalist design choices too – this feels like a really premium ship compared to the rest of the fleet. But that doesn’t mean a compromise on features – guests love the VR gaming, go-karts and range of restaurants even if most things come with an extra charge. In part because of its smaller size, Norwegian Spirit offers fewer venues and attractions than newer Norwegian vessels, but it still offers a lot.
What is the average cost of a Norwegian Cruise Line ship?
So join me as we set sail on a journey through the NCL fleet, and discover which ship is the perfect fit for your next cruise vacation. To ensure you end up on the right Norwegian Cruise Line ship for you, it pays to understand which Norwegian Cruise Line ships are the biggest and which are the smallest before booking. The smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ships are best for vacationers who like a less crowded, more intimate resort experience. The Wanderlust Project is a website that offers all the info you need for your next cruise trips. With over 7 years of experience in the cruise industry, she brings a blend of insightful reporting and firsthand cruising knowledge. While the ship’s amenities are crucial, the destinations it sails to are equally important.
Are bigger Norwegian Cruise Line ships coming?
As I set sail on my first Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) adventure, I couldn’t help but feel like a bird soaring through the open sky. The bright blue ocean stretched out in front of me like an endless horizon, and the warm sun beamed down on my face. Unveiled in 1998, Norwegian Spirit is not only the smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ship but also the oldest ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet. At 25 years old, it's likely to be phased out of the Norwegian fleet in the coming years. Here, every Norwegian Cruise Line ship currently in operation is ranked from biggest to smallest.

And this is why people love it – the ship itself is nothing too special, although people do enjoy the quieter atmosphere and the extra space offered by hosting fewer guests. That’s helped by the shorter itineraries – Norwegian Sky specialises in 3-5 day cruising. It’s a ship that is super lively, has great food and overall just feels like a classic short break cruise experience, without a load of fancy bells and whistles. This tells you that Encore’s slight shift in focus to maximising family areas isn’t as important as the adults-only spaces that Bliss has. It’s still a very popular ship – and people do love the exclusive Onda restaurant – but most cruisers prefer that extra adults-only space that Bliss has in comparison. Another of the popular mid-sized Gem Class ships, Norwegian Pearl scores slightly lower than her sister the Norwegian Jewel but she is still very popular among cruise passengers.
Traveling Style:
The key unique features are extra open spaces on deck and a focus on even better service, with a higher staff-to-guest ratio ensuring you never have to wait for everything. Reading the reviews, the negative comments are mainly those levelled at the cruise line as a whole – disorganisation at ports, the expense of paying extra for so much on-board, and pre-cruise service. So it feels a little harsh that this exciting, feature-packed ship is nearer the bottom of the list.
What is the dress code for Norwegian Cruise Line ships?
And when you’re craving food, there’s a choice of three Main Dining Rooms, a buffet restaurant, and a 24-hour pub. If you’re in the mood for something different, there are 13 other eateries offering everything from Mexican to Texas-style barbecue. Launched in April 2018 and refurbished in 2021, Norwegian Bliss offer passengers a memorable cruising experience. We were impressed with the range of cabin layouts, from one-person Studios to The Haven villas, penthouses, and suites. If you’re looking for a touch of luxury, The Haven accommodations come with perks like private sun decks, king-sized beds, and 24-hour butler service. Other Norwegian cruise ships, such as Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Sun, have specific features that might make them better options for solo travelers or retirees.
Depending on your preference, you can choose a NCL ship that’s just right for you. If you’re exploring other cruise lines, we’ve also put together a list of the best Princess Cruise ships and best Royal Caribbean Cruise ships. Because of their smaller size, they have a much more intimate feel, at least when compared to the biggest cruise ships at Norwegian and other mass-market lines, and they hold far fewer people.
Norwegian Encore is also the setting for one of the biggest go-kart racing tracks at sea. The racecourse also features a middle-of-the-track observation area where your family and friends can cheer you on to victory — and even shoot you with "lasers" that'll give you a boost of power. It depends on you, your preference for cruising style, and who you’re sailing with.
The world's fourth-biggest cruise line also has quite a few relatively small cruise ships that carry just 2,000 or so people and provide a more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are just half the size of Norwegian Cruise Line's biggest ships. These are vessels that, notably, have fewer deck-top activities and interior venues than the biggest Norwegian cruise ships.
According to reviews and our testing methodology, the best NCL ship is Norwegian Bliss. But ultimately, the best ship for you depends on your preference and taste. The newer ships offer a lot of features and activities, so they’re great for families. But if you want somewhat quiet and a classic cruising experience, older ships can be a lot of fun too.
So sit back and enjoy reading about the NCL cruise ships that people love and what makes them so special. At 169,116 tons, Norwegian Encore is bigger than all but 21 other cruise ships in the world, 15 of which are operated by the three lines mentioned above. Introduced in 2019, the Norwegian Encore has quickly become a favorite among cruisers. This ship is a celebration of the arts, with the Tony Award®-winning musical “Kinky Boots” headlining its entertainment lineup. The Haven suites, with their spacious layouts and dedicated butler service, are a an excellent choice for those who want an upscale experience. For adults who want a varied cruise, the Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva are much newer, have a lot more to do, and feel like a luxury resort.
At 169,116 tons and carrying 3,958 passengers, Norwegian Encore is the largest ship in the Norwegian fleet. That means it has the most space for the many over-the-top family fun zones that are at the core of the four Breakaway-Plus vessels — a series of ships that was specifically designed with families in mind. Let’s start with the positives – Norwegian Epic is a ship that has something for everyone. It is packed with live entertainment, fun activities including bowling, some great water slides and a lot of restaurant choices. Norwegian Sky is the longest-serving and smallest ship in the NCL fleet but it’s still really popular with guests. Don’t expect a huge amount of attractions, but that’s made up for with a really packed schedule of entertainment from the moment you step onboard, right until your last morning.
Meanwhile, Norwegian Escape excels in providing a premium ship experience with its upscale dining options and elegant design. They have the biggest spas and casinos among vessels in the Norwegian fleet and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in suite and cabin types. The Norwegian Jade, with its unique Mediterranean offerings, stands out in the NCL lineup. The ship’s Courtyard Villas, offering private pools and sundecks, are a luxury offering.
It’s a smaller ship in the fleet, so better suited to adults who want a more relaxing break. Passengers are also loyal to Gem and will cruise on her regularly after their first. Norwegian Pearl also reviews really well from guests of the various themed cruises that take place on-board, often completely chartering the ship. But the number one recurring comment in the reviews is the service, which apparently is exceptional. Key to that is their fleet, which includes a mix of smaller ships well-suited to a more relaxing break, and some of the more modern ships that are loaded with exciting attractions. NCL is a cruise line that’s great for families and younger travellers looking to enjoy a cruise packed with variety, good food and great destinations.

One of the cool things about this port of call is that you can enjoy an amazing beach day without having to spend any money at all. If you wish to explore the outside area of the cruise port you will turn left and if you wish to visit the beach area turn right.
Is The Port of Roatan Safe for Cruise Visitors?
One of the common questions that cruise travelers have is whether Honduras is safe for cruise ships. Honduras is a developing country that has a high level of poverty, crime, and violence. However, Roatan is a separate island that is relatively safer and more peaceful than the mainland. This 20-acre beachfront adventure park offers many options for adventure seekers.
The port agent is Anacaribe, who has a long standing tradition as port agent for cruise lines calling the Port of Roatan. The largest of the two ports in Roatán is the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, located on the southwest coast of the island and owned by Carnival corporation. Obviously, this is the docking port (and Terminal) for Carnival ships but also for Princess, Holland & America, and all other cruise lines belonging to this corporation. Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay whilst ships from all other cruise lines dock at Port of Roatán Town Center (aka Coxen Hole).
You will get to see all kinds of things along the way, like the noncommercial French Harbor, French Cay, and the Iguana Farm with large green iguanas. Fully air-conditioned beach cabanas come with two lounge chairs, a hammock, necessary beach items, free Wi-Fi and waiter service in a semi-secluded beach area. Adjacent to the Cruise Center is the white sand 10-acre Mahogany Beach, which can be reached on foot or via the "Magic Flying Beach Chair" (unlimited rides for $14/ day). Located adjacent to Mahogany Bay beach is a zipline that takes you right down into the beach area. The zipline runs through jungle vegetation and over water, ravines, mangroves, and creeks.
There are two cruise ports there, one of them being the Carnival Corp.-owned Mahogany Bay. This privately owned island resort is located in French Harbor, on Roatan’s southern coast. Besides swimming in a protected cove, here you can go horseback riding, snorkeling, scuba diving, zip-lining, jet-skiing, rope-swinging, paddle-boarding, and kayaking. The various cruise lines that dock at the Port of Roatan have set projected cruise ship schedules a year to two years in advance. However, depending on weather and other unforeseen circumstances, arrival times and itineraries may change.
There are many taxis and buses available for transport in Roatán. The “buses” are typically 16-passenger vans running regular routes between Coxen Hole and West End or French Harbour. The island is best known for its private sanctuary "Animal Rescue Center" and its great collection of exotic animals, most of which were previously abused in zoos and circuses. As a result, we used them for our Roatan Island Tour and they were outstanding!
The highlight of Mahogany Bay is Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. You can access the beach by walking for about 5 minutes, or by taking the Magical Flying Beach Chair, a ski-lift-style ride that costs $14 per person for unlimited rides. The beach is clean and spacious, with plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, cabanas, and water sports equipment for rent. There is also a beach bar and grill, a volleyball court, and a water park for kids. It is important to note that there are actually two cruise ports, both on the south side of the island.
With a small population of about 5,000 people, Coxen Hole has few cultural or historical attractions. It also has a smaller number of restaurants and duty-free shops for visitors compared to larger ports in the Caribbean. Besides Coxen Hole, the other cruise port on Roatan is Mahogany Bay. Anyone traveling with Carnival Cruise Lines and related brands will land there instead.
